Spain

The progress of another style of hospitals, called xenodochium, spread throughout Spain as the first Spanish hospital in 580 CE. Founded by the bishop Masona, it served as a safe place and housing for refugees or pilgrims and existed with nursing techniques to provide to the poor. It was essential to provide healthcare and also everyday care such as food and housing to those in need.

It was run by Christian figures, as well as physicians and nurses who provided care to anyone, no matter where they were found or who they were. If they were a “slave or free, Christian or Jew” (Sixth-Century Jerusalem Article), they would still take them in and attempt to cure them. This again the portrayal of Christian values of loving thy neighbor and providing healthcare to all, without being selective. The bishop had the role of establishing the ethics of a hospital and made that decision to heal all other individuals.
